Reducing Update Package Size

Our customer is using Plant SCADA 2023 R2 (v8.5) and performs monthly product updates aligned with AVEVA’s release cycle. However, the current update process has become difficult and time‑consuming due to their environment and infrastructure limitations.

Because they must download updates to a local machine and then transfer them to a remote server via VPN—an unreliable and inconsistent connection—the large update package size creates a significant bottleneck. Starting from Update 5, the installation package size has increased to approximately 1 GB, compared with the 150–200 MB packages for Update 4 and earlier.

Idea business value

1. Productivity Improvement
The customer reported that transferring the update package to the remote server takes up to 8 hours due to the large file size and VPN instability. A smaller update package would dramatically reduce transfer time and enable smoother monthly update cycles.

2. Storage Space Savings
Smaller update packages would consume less storage on the server, easing resource constraints and reducing the need for frequent storage cleanup or expansion.
